My Carnelian Pendant

Colorful Carnelian Crystal

I’ve always been attracted to rocks.  So when a rock store opened in downtown Beaufort when I was a teen, I spent a lot of time reaching into the cool depths of the hematite display and marveling at the liquid plasma-like exterior of these mystical stones.  As an adult, I purchased crystal guides to learn about their metaphysical qualities.  However, when I go crystal shopping, I still choose my stones by what speaks to me instead of planning ahead of time what I am going to buy.  This summer I bought a carnelian pendant from a beautiful Tibetan store in Fort Greene, Brooklyn called 21 Tara.  The crystal called to me so of course I decided to buy it!  The friendly shop owner told me that the stone is a carnelian.

One of the reasons I was excited that I was led to the carnelian is because it has a grounding and stabilizing effect.  I am one of those head-in-the-clouds people and so being grounded is something I work on daily – usually through being barefoot or taking long walks in nature.  Another great attribute of carnelian is that it promotes vitality and creativity putting me in the perfect mind-set to work on one of my paintings or collages.  (I also look to my guide Ganesha when I lose my flow.  He never fails to give me fantastic ideas that resonate at my core.)  The last reason I was super-hyped about this stone is that it promotes courage, trusting one’s self, making positive life decisions, and overcoming negative conditioning and abuse.  Throughout the years I’ve struggled with these related themes, especially in relation to work, but am now on the up-and-up.  It’s empowering to know that my higher self led me to this stone that cultivates the attributes I am most in need of focusing on.

Carnelian helps to eliminate the fear of death and ancient civilizations used it to aid the deceased with their after-life journeys.  In relation to physical health, this crystal can be used to overcome frigidity and metabolism issues, and assists in healing lower back problems, rheumatism, and arthritis.  It further regulates bodily fluids and the kidneys, stimulates healing in bones and ligaments, ensures a healthy supply of blood to organs and tissue, and aids in the absorption of vitamins and minerals.  If a woman is concerned with her reproductive health, this stone activates the root chakra, thereby influencing the female organs and increasing fertility.  And if a man is suffering from the embarrassing problem of impotency (women be kind!) use the carnelian during a crystal or chakra meditation.

With respect to mental health, this stone helps relieve depression and anger, and encourages concentration while thwarting mental laziness.  During meditation, carnelian helps to calm the mind.  It further promotes analytic abilities and perceptions, and protects against envy, rage, and resentment – whether emanating to or from you.  And if you are in a work rut, carnelian motivates for success.

Practically, carnelian cleanses other stones so keeping it amongst your other crystals alleviates the need to constantly re-charge them.  If you are looking for a stone to keep at the entrance of your home, placing this spectacular crystal near the front door invokes protection and invites abundance.  The carnelian is one of my favorite stones and I get compliments whenever I wear it!

Eye-and-eye mantra: Be the woman you want to be at all times.
